Sutter’s Mill – On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall was constructing a sawmill for John Sutter in Coloma, California when he first spotted flakes of gold. At first, he tried to keep the discovery a secret but word soon got out and the California gold rush began. More than 300,000 people poured into the state in search of gold, causing the largest mass migration in U.S. history. Sutter did not prosper from the gold strike on his land. Instead, many of his workers deserted his mill to search for gold and Sutter ended up close to bankruptcy.:
